Awareness Test

When I purchased and started riding a bicycle again, I started noticing that most cars don't notice you. As a result I noticed that I became more aware of bikes when I was driving. With as high as gas prices are I've been trying to ride my bike as much as possible and have become a very half-asssed advocate of bicycling. I would like to start doing more and would love Provo to encourage bike riding and become more bike friendly. I saw this commercial today on Salt Lake's Critical Mass blog (see here for info on critical mass) It has both humor and a good message.

StumbleUpon for Safari!! (Sort of)

I thought everyone should know that StumbleUpon is (sort of) now available for Safari. If you don't know what StumbleUpon is and you use Firefox you should check it out. Its basically a Firefox extension that puts a button in your menu bar that when clicked takes you to a random site based on your interests. Its a great way to find new sites or gifts, or pictures and to kill alot of time. If you use Safari you were previously out of luck for StumbleUpon but some kind fellow has released Stumbi. You need SIMBL installed to use it (which can be slightly tricky) and its not quite the full Stumble experience but it will do.

So I haven't really figured out what i'm going to do about posting photos. In the meantime I decided I better post some on here. I feel like I need to get them out somewhere. I take so many pictures that just sit on my hard drive. I need to start doing something even if its just posting them on my lowly blog. These are some photos I took at Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, AL. This is an old steel mill. It has been turned into a museum/venue. It is allegedly haunted and has been featured on many "scariest places on earth" type shows.

After much inner struggle to avoid jumping on the Twitter bandwagon I conceded yesterday. I'm going to give it a shot for a couple weeks. If it doesn't completely suck me in I'm going to ditch it. For those of you who don't know, Twitter is simple way to find out what your friends are up to. A blog I read yesterday summed it up best, the author likened Twitter to your instant messenger away message without the instant messenger. I figured I would stick to it if all my friends signed up for it. So here is my request to all of you (all 3 of you) to sign up for twitter and add me. Time Lapse of Man Trapped in Elevator

Its a video post kinda day. This is one that The New Yorker posted. A few years ago Nicholas White was trapped in an elevator for 41 hours! Here is the time lapse video from the security camera. Keep your eyes on the top right car. This would be the worst. Update: Interesting elevator fun fact taken from the above article. The door close button on elevators built after the 80's doesn't do anything, unless you have the emergency key turned on. It was added to give the illusion of control.

I Want to Make a Photography Blog

I have long wanted to make photographs that were possibly, maybe worth sharing with others on the interwebs. I feel like I might take a decent enough photo now to post them. Which brings me to the poll. Its about how to implement the photos. I could either just post some on this blog, I could start a new blog separate from my main blog and post them there (like someone I know) or I could start a new non-blog website devoted to just photography. I sort of already started building such a site but I'm not sure I want to roll with that idea. So I turn my problem to you. EDIT: I guess I could also post them on Flickr, which i've already set up. THE Lost Theory

I was reading my blogs (are blogs the modern day "stories"? as in, I was watching my stories?) and someone linked to a website with one of the most thorough Lost theories I have ever read. If you are a fan of the show you should definitely read this. Its pretty long. There is a main theory, then it goes on to a questions and answers section, then a rebuttals section. There a couple smaller pieces after the rebuttals. If you haven't watched the show or you're not totally caught up there are some big spoilers. I always wondered about those people that stand out on the street dressed as slice of pizza or a statue of liberty that dance around with a sign. How much do they get paid? Do they work for the company they're promoting or a thrid-party sign dancing company? Are they hired specifically to dance? or do they ro-sham-bo fellow employees to see who gets stuck with shift of dancing in the hot/cold/rain/snow/big truck persecution. So many unanswered questions!! Well i found my answer. I was perusing craigslist and there it was:

My New Religion (Things I Wish I'd Written)

Two of my favorite things are A) A parody or satire of something serious and B) When people don't get it and starting "acting a fool". This is one of the funnier instances. There is a "Church" called the The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Here is a little bit about the "religion" from wikipedia:

"The Flying Spaghetti Monster (also known as the Spaghedeity) is the deity of a parody religion called The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster and its system of beliefs, "Pastafarianism". The religion was founded in 2005 by Bobby Henderson to protest the decision by the Kansas State Board of Education to require the teaching of intelligent design as an alternative to biological evolution.
In an open letter sent to the education board, Henderson professes belief in a supernatural creator called the Flying Spaghetti Monster which resembles spaghetti and meatballs. He furthermore calls for the "Pastafarian" theory of creation to be taught in science classrooms."

I am writing you with much concern after having read of your hearing to decide whether the alternative theory of Intelligent Design should be taught along with the theory of Evolution. I think we can all agree that it is important for students to hear multiple viewpoints so they can choose for themselves the theory that makes the most sense to them. I am concerned, however, that students will only hear one theory of Intelligent Design.

Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. We feel strongly that the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him.

It is for this reason that I’m writing you today, to formally request that this alternative theory be taught in your schools, along with the other two theories. In fact, I will go so far as to say, if you do not agree to do this, we will be forced to proceed with legal action. I’m sure you see where we are coming from. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage. I’m sure you now realize how important it is that your students are taught this alternate theory. It is absolutely imperative that they realize that observable evidence is at the discretion of a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Furthermore, it is disrespectful to teach our beliefs without wearing His chosen outfit, which of course is full pirate regalia. I cannot stress the importance of this enough, and unfortunately cannot describe in detail why this must be done as I fear this letter is already becoming too long. The concise explanation is that He becomes angry if we don’t.

You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

In conclusion, thank you for taking the time to hear our views and beliefs. I hope I was able to convey the importance of teaching this theory to your students. We will of course be able to train the teachers in this alternate theory. I am eagerly awaiting your response, and hope dearly that no legal action will need to be taken. I think we can all look forward to the time when these three theories are given equal time in our science classrooms across the country, and eventually the world; One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence.

Study Says 37% of Statistics are Made Up.

I sometimes wish I had the means to make highly accurate, scientific studies of completely pointless things. For example. The other day a friend and I were walking out of the mall and a big truck drove by and yelled sometime like "Lookin' good today fellas!" Now some might say "well that was nice of them" but what those people don't know is I was sporting a rather flamboyant mustache or moustache (which ever you prefer)
What i'm getting at is these guys were to trying to razz me for being gay. Which I am not. It got me thinking. I wish I could conduct a study of what types of cars people yell stupid things from. If I had to perform this study in a highly informal manner, based only on my personal experiences I think the findings would look something like this:

I feel that this chart I whipped up would be a fairly accurate reflection of what a real study would find. Here are some examples of studies that are completely pointless. Taken from various places around the web.

Sydney and I aren't really big on Valentine's day. We see no reason we should go out on a day some Saint designated a long time ago and wait extra time for a table at a restaurant. We went to Bombay House a few years ago for Vaelentine's and it was a 4 hour wait! Why would we wait for that when we could go the day before or after and wait 5 mintues? So hence the Valentines Mcdonald's tradition was born. Every year we go to Mcdonald's on Valentine's day, then we go to a nice restaurant the day before or after. This year I wasn't home so here's a little late Valentine for my lady. (Yes i ripped the valentines off Jonathan Canlas' blog)

Project Apple Pt 2. The Honeycrisp

Up next we have the Honeycrisp apple. I was at the grocery store and was on the hunt for pink lady apples. Upon discovering Macey's didn't have the apples I settled on the Honeycrisp. I was pretty excited because A) I had never had one. and B) The name implied an extravaganza of flavorful and textural goodness. These particular specimens were quite small, though I have seen Honeycrisps that were much larger. (I'm learning that Macey's has rather poor produce) They got is right on the "crisp" part of the name but left much to be desired on the "Honey" side of things. In my notes I just wrote "Taste-ok" That's as descriptive as I got. I couldn't even liken the flavor to another apple or describe it's taste. It was just "ok"

As for the Capone factor I give it a 0. I set this apple on the chair next to me as I played Rock Band and he didn't even think about taking it. Perhaps he has learned to read my face and based on how much I am enjoying the apple decides that he must try it. It could also be that he could smell its mediocrity.
Taste: 5
Texture: 15

Who it's for:

People with no taste buds who need a small, crispy bite to eat. Those with needy dogs with an insatiable hunger for apples.

To be fair it could be that because Macey's has such poor produce that I got a bum apple. If this is the case and someone knows better, tell me in the comments and I will try a Honeycrisp from another source.

For the past couple years i went through life thinking i was unique, special, and individual. All because i could flap my hands back and forth really quickly, kind of clapping. Some people called it the fish flop. I had never met anyone else that could do it like me. My friend sent me the following video today. This man has to be my dad.

Project Apple Pt.1. The Rules. The Rome Apple

Project apple is underway and if you don't know what i'm talking about read this first. Done? good. So i unfortunately didn't get to eat all of the apples. I had to leave before i got through them all. I will continue when i get back though. I will lay down the ground rules for you now. I ate each apple and took notes in the trusty moleskine. I took note of the taste texture and any other notes I had. I also rated them on what i call the Capone Factor. Let me give you a little history lesson. One day I was eating an apple and wanted to see what Capone (my dog) would do if given the chance to eat an apple. I soon found that he is a fiend for apples. We don't normally let me him eat "people" food but I usually let him nibble on my apple when i'm done. He eats it like a human. Using his paw to hold my hand down.

So I rated each apple on a scale from 1 to 10 based on Capones reaction to each apple. 1 being he didn't even notice the apple and 10 being the apple is his first born child and I am trying to eat it, except he doesn't want to protect it, he wants a piece of that sweet, sweet baby. I will also rate each apple on a completely arbitrary scale from 3 to 17 (this a whole other blog post itself) based on taste and texture. On to the first apple!

The Rome

The Rome was one of the apples I'd never heard of. It was one of the prettiest apples I'd ever seen. The picture doesn't do it justice. Its taste was very sweet and quite delicious. The texture wasn't very good. It was soft. I really like a good crisp apple, something with a good snap when you bite a chunk off. This apple is a tough one because the flavor was amazing but I'm not sure it's worth it because of the soft texture. If given the choice between a granny smith and a rome I would take the rome. If you prefer a softer apple you will love it.

"Usage: The best apple for baking, but also good eaten fresh & in salads.

Selection: Good-quality Rome apples will be firm with smooth and clean skin. Test the firmness of the apple by holding it in the palm of your hand. (Do not push with your thumb). It should feel solid and heavy, not soft and light.

Avoid: Avoid product with soft or dark spots. Also if the apple skin wrinkles when you rub your thumb across it, the apple has probably been in cold storage too long or has not been kept cool."

Sometimes before I leave to go to a city or country I've never been, my mind starts running wild with ideas of what I expect it to be like. Usually when i arrive there are certain aspects that are what I expected but I'm usually way off. Vietnam is exactly like I thought it would be. Palm trees, houses practically stacked on top of each other, scooters everywhere. Which brings me to the purpose of this post. After seeing many people on scooters carrying things that any mortal man would deem impossible I decided I should document as many as I could. So here is the first installment of what will hopefully be a recurring series of posts with people carry strange things on scooters.

I finally got around to making a web gallery. I will eventually have my website up with more galleries but i thought i would throw up some pictures in the meantime. Sydney and I are in search of a place to live come March/April. We don't want to resort to tactics of these people but we are having no luck finding a place. Here are some of our criteria:

Pet friendly (one small dog)

Preferably a house or duplex

At least 2 bedrooms

In Provo/South Orem

Washer and dryer would be killer

Dishwasher would be fantabulous

We have come to the conclusion that there is know could housing available. Especially with everyone being jerks about the pet thing. If anybody has any information leading to the capture of such a dwelling you will be rewarded handsomely.

In the past few months I have rekindled my love of the apple. So today
I went out and bought one of every apple I had either, never had/heard
of or hadn't had in awhile.

I have had pink ladies, golden delicious, red delicious, and honey crisp (sounds like a cereal). I have never had the others. I will report back about the different apples tastes and textures.

Here are a few Interesting fun facts about apples.

The pink lady apple is a cross between a golden delicious and a lady Williams apple.

Apples are natural toothbrushes

Michael Stipe's dressing room. Not the coolest guest I could have
posed in front of but I happened be standing in line here because the
bomb squad wouldn't let us in our dressing room because they thought

In an effort to come off more intimidating and strike fear in the
hearts of men I have decided to change they way I spell the word
"actually". From here on out I will spell it "axtually". By adding the weapon reference I think people will take me more seriously. Take these two sentences for example.

"Actually billy I think we're going to do things my way!"

"Axtually billy I think we're going to do things my way!"

Its subtle, but I think the second sentence has Billy shaking in his
boots. Keep an eye out for me using new spellings of other words
involving the words "stab" "kill" and "nun chuck"

Facial hair update

Day 22 facial hair. Day by day I have been receiving more and more
compliments about the beard. Yesterday someone called it a "kenny
loggins beard" which to me is the highest compliment one could receive
about a beard. I haven't trimmed it at all. I just have amazingly
consistent facial hair.

Day 1. Today I embarked on a grand adventure and so far its become a damned adventure. It all began when the kind folks at the u.s. Airways check in desk Said they could get me to atlanta 2 hours earlier and non stop on a delta flight at no additional charge. I of course accepted and was on my way. Upon arriving at the gate i was greeted with a pleasant surprise. My gosh dang flight had been delayed 6 hours! I was then rerouted to orange county and then on to the ATL (shout out to luda.) Now i am sitting in orange county and have just been informed my second flight has been delayed. Ha zaa! On a positive note i just saw my first iphone in the wild outside customers at my former place of employment which, for the protection of the innocent, i will refer to in this blog as S.
